ITINERARY
ITINERARY FOR THE 1 DAY INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU
Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – KM104 – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Cusco
You’ll be starting off your adventure bright and early! Your tour guide will come to pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4 am, ready to take you to the Ollantaytambo train station in your very own private transportation. If you prefer to start your journey in Ollantaytambo, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Just let us know and we’ll pick you up from your hotel at 5:30 AM.
Before you hop onto the train at Ollantaytambo, your guide will make sure you’re all set with a picnic lunch to enjoy along the way. Just be sure to let us know of any food allergies or dietary restrictions when you book your tour. After a scenic 1-hour and 15-minute train ride with breathtaking views, you’ll arrive at Km104, a famous spot that sits at an altitude of 2,000 m/6,560 ft above sea level. From there, you and your guide will disembark and start your journey, taking in the stunning sights of the Urubamba River. Get ready for an exciting day ahead!
Discovering the Wonders of the Inca Trail: From Cloud Forests to Wiñay Wayna Ruins and Beyond
As you cross the Urubamba River on a charming footbridge, don’t forget to have your passport handy for the checkpoint. You’ll also get to visit a nearby Inca site before embarking on a gentle uphill trek for the first hour and a half. But don’t worry – there are several shelters along the way where you can take a break from the sun or rain, depending on the season. Keep your camera ready as you’ll be stopping at several outlooks to capture the stunning views of the Urubamba River. You’ll even pass through a cloud forest, so be prepared to possibly get a little wet.
The next hour and a half will be slightly steeper uphill, but the sight of a gorgeous waterfall at the end of the hike will make it all worth it. Take your time to snap some photos as you cross the bridge below the waterfall, then prepare to be amazed by the awe-inspiring Wiñay Wayna, located at 2,600 m/8,500 ft above sea level. These remarkable Inca ruins have an intriguing history, and some parts are still shrouded by the dense jungle.
The Incredible Flora and Fauna
As you continue on toward Machu Picchu, you’ll be hiking through a lush sub-tropical jungle and breathing in the same air as the Incas once did. Your guide will be sharing fascinating facts about the local ruins and the incredible flora and fauna of this microclimate, so feel free to ask any questions you may have. Following a short 5-minute walk, you’ll arrive at the Wiñay Wayna camping area, which is the last camping area for the individuals who are climbing the four-day Inca Trail. This is where you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and some well-deserved downtime.
Discovering the Magic of Machu Picchu: A Trek to the Sun Gate and a Guided Tour of the Ancient Wonder
After your satisfying lunch, you’ll have a mostly flat walk to the Sun Gate, where you’ll get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu. It’s a gentle hour-and-a-half walk to a set of impressive stairs that were carved directly into the bedrock by the Inca. As you ascend these ancient stairs, you’ll be just steps away from the revered Sun Gate. Take your time to appreciate the awe-inspiring view of Machu Picchu from this vantage point and snap some photos to capture the moment.
The last 45 minutes down from the Sun Gate will provide you with even more unique vantage points to take photos of Machu Picchu. Along the way, your knowledgeable guide will be pointing out some important Inca sites and explaining their significance. This part of the trail offers a chance to walk in the footsteps of the Inca, so be sure to take it all in and savor the moment. Your guide will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about these historical places as you make your way to Machu Picchu.
From Afternoon Delight to Evening Wonder: Exploring the Best of Machu Picchu
After a fulfilling and exciting day of hiking, you will finally arrive at Machu Picchu in the afternoon. The timing is perfect, as the crowds are beginning to thin out and you will have the chance to capture some amazing photographs in the beautiful afternoon light. Once you arrive, you will have time to take in the beauty and wonder of the site from the viewing platforms.
Your knowledgeable guide will then take you on a comprehensive tour of the most important parts of Machu Picchu, including the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condor, the Temple of Three Windows, the Sun Dial, the Quarry, and the House of the Inca. You will also learn about the three sectors of the site: agricultural, residential, and religious. Take your time to savor this magical experience before taking the bus down to Machu Picchu City.
In the evening, at 6:20 pm, you will take the Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo. For those who upgrade to the Vistadome, the departure time will be at 6:10 pm. From there, our private van will take you back to your hotel in Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of around 10:00 pm. Relax and enjoy the ride, while reminiscing about the incredible adventure you have just experienced.

In preparation: try walking 15km/9 mi. in a day or working out in the months leading up to the trek. It is also important to be well-acclimatized to the altitude. We suggest trying to spend at least 2 or 3 days in Cusco (3,350 m/11,047 ft) prior to starting the trek.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Altitude sickness can be a concern for those traveling to higher elevations such as Cusco and the Sacred Valley. However, if you exercise regularly and spend a few days in the area, you can usually acclimate normally within 24-48 hours. It is always a good idea to consult with a physician for appropriate advice and medications.
To combat altitude sickness, we recommend drinking plenty of water, drinking coca tea, and using oxygen if needed. Our guides are trained to help you manage any symptoms of altitude sickness, so you can rest easy knowing you are in good hands. For more detailed information about altitude sickness, please refer to our FAQs section.
