Your adventure begins with a scenic train ride through the Sacred Valley to Km 104. From there, you disembark to hike along original Inca stone paths, passing the impressive terraced ruins of Wiñay Wayna. Afterward, you trek through sub-tropical flora until you pass through the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku) for your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Finally, you enjoy a comprehensive private guided tour of the citadel before returning comfortably to Cusco in the evening.
This 1-day express route follows the final stretch of the classic royal highway, making it the ideal choice for travelers who want the true physical and historical experience of arriving at Machu Picchu on foot without multi-day camping. Hiking through shifting microclimates, from high-Andean peaks down into the lush cloud forest, allows you to discover ancient terrace ruins, native flora, and historical landmarks at a comfortable pace before reaching the iconic Sun Gate in the golden afternoon light.

1 Day Inca Trail To Machu Picchu
Your expedition begins early at 4:00 AM with a private hotel pickup in Cusco for a scenic drive to the Ollantaytambo train station. (If you are staying in Ollantaytambo, we collect you directly from your hotel at 5:30 AM). Next, you board the train for a scenic 75-minute ride along the Urubamba River to Km 104 (2,000 m / 6,560 ft), where you disembark and cross the footbridge to begin your hike.
After passing the official Inca Trail checkpoint, you trek gradually uphill for 1.5 hours, enjoying viewpoints overlooking the rushing river below. As you continue, the trail steepens through lush cloud forest, passing a delicate waterfall before arriving at the magnificent terraced ruins of Wiñay Wayna (2,600 m / 8,500 ft). Here, your expert guide shares insights into Inca architecture, microclimates, and native flora.
After resting and enjoying a fresh box lunch near the campsite, you hike along a mostly flat trail for 1.5 hours toward the stone steps of the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Upon arrival, you will take in your first spectacular, panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Afterward, you descend for 45 minutes toward the upper terraces of the citadel as afternoon crowds begin to disperse.
In the late afternoon, your guide leads a comprehensive private tour of the historic site, covering primary monuments such as the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condor, and the Sacred Rock. Finally, you descend by bus to Aguas Calientes, board the evening return train to Ollantaytambo, and relax in private transport back to your hotel door in Cusco by 10:00 PM.

In fact, we offer a complimentary arrival transfer from Cusco airport to your hotel. Therefore, please share your flight details at least 14 days before arrival. Our representative will meet you outside the arrival terminal holding an Apple Travel Peru sign.
Your pre-trek orientation takes place at 6:00 PM the evening prior to departure at our Cusco office (Calle Garcilaso 210, Office 212). Your guide will review trail details and answer any questions.
Absolutely! You can store your main luggage safely at our Cusco office or at your hotel free of charge during your trek.
To reserve your trek, fill out our online booking form with full passport details (full name, passport number, gender, date of birth, and nationality) for each hiker. Additionally, we require a deposit to secure your official Inca Trail permit, as daily permits are strictly limited by government regulations.
You can pay your remaining balance in cash (US dollars or Peruvian soles) at our Cusco office during your pre-trek briefing to avoid processing fees. Alternatively, you can pay online via VISA or PayPal, which incurs an added 5.5% service fee.
No. Official Inca Trail permits issued by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable. Therefore, date changes are not permitted once a permit is registered.
Yes. You must present the exact original physical passport used at the time of booking at the Km 104 checkpoint. However, if you renew your passport before the trek, you must notify us immediately to update permit details ($25 USD fee) or carry both physical passports.
Weather along the cloud forest trail is variable. For example, mornings can be warm and humid, while light rain or mist is common in the subtropical jungle sections. Therefore, we recommend dressing in breathable layers and carrying rain gear in your daypack.
We rate this trek as moderate to challenging. Although you walk 12 km (7.5 miles) in one day, the route includes steep Inca staircases and climbs to 2,720 meters. Consequently, we recommend regular cardiovascular exercise and at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco or the Sacred Valley prior to hiking.
Your departure train from Ollantaytambo to Km 104 leaves early in the morning (around 6:10 AM – 6:40 AM). The return Expedition train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo departs at 6:20 PM (or 6:10 PM for the Vistadome upgrade).
Yes. Our private transport will meet you at the Ollantaytambo train station and drop you off directly at your hotel door in Cusco.
