The 5 Rules of the Official Permit System (Must-Know Before Booking)

1. Permits Are 100% Non-Transferable & Non-Refundable: The Ministry of Culture ties every permit directly to your official passport number. If your plans change or a group member cancels, the permit cannot be reassigned, transferred to another hiker, or refunded.
2. 500 Permits Does NOT Mean 500 Hikers: Out of the 500 daily permits issued for Km 82 (Classic 4-Day Trek), approximately 300 are legally required for essential local support staff, including licensed guides, professional cooks, and local porters. Only ~200 permits per day are available for tourists.
3. Passport Precision is Required: You must provide your exact legal name, passport number, date of birth, gender, and nationality. 4. Annual February Trail Closure: The entire Inca Trail network (including both the 4-Day Classic and 2-Day Short routes) is closed for the entire month of February every year for environmental conservation, trail maintenance, and drainage repair. Can I join a waiting list or get a refund if someone cancels their permit?

No. Inca Trail permits are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable under Peruvian government policy. If a traveler cancels, their permit spot is permanently canceled by the system and is not returned to the pool for re-sale. There is no official waitlist system.
