There’s a different kind of magic in reaching Machu Picchu by road.
Instead of the classic train journey, this 2-day adventure takes you through high Andean passes, cloud forest valleys, and one of the most scenic overland routes in southern Peru. It’s longer, yes. But it’s immersive. You feel the transition — from Cusco’s highlands to the warm jungle edge of the Amazon basin.
This route is perfect for travelers who want a more adventurous and budget-friendly alternative without missing the full Machu Picchu experience. You’ll drive across dramatic mountain landscapes, descend toward the lush Santa Teresa valley, walk alongside the railway tracks from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes, and wake up early for a guided exploration of the Inca citadel.
It’s an active journey. It’s scenic. And it rewards you with that unforgettable first view of Machu Picchu rising above the mist.

Machu Picchu by Car – 2 Days Adventure
Your journey begins early in the morning with hotel pickup in Cusco.
We leave the city behind and begin ascending through winding mountain roads toward Abra Málaga Pass, one of the highest drivable points on the route at approximately 4,300 meters (14,107 ft). From here, the landscape changes dramatically. The cold Andean air slowly gives way to a warmer, greener environment as we descend into the cloud forest.
The drive itself is part of the experience. Snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls, and tropical vegetation accompany us as we continue toward the Santa Teresa region.
By midday, we arrive at Hidroeléctrica, where you’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, the adventure continues on foot. You will walk approximately 2.5 to 3 hours along a flat and scenic path that follows the railway line toward Aguas Calientes. The route is surrounded by lush vegetation, mountains, and the rushing Urubamba River nearby. It is an easy walk, suitable for most fitness levels.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo), you will check into your hotel.
In the evening, you’ll meet your guide for a briefing about the next day’s visit to Machu Picchu. Afterward, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and rest early — tomorrow begins before sunrise.
Today is the highlight.
Very early in the morning, you’ll head to the bus station to catch one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu. The short but scenic ride zigzags up the mountain until the ancient citadel appears above the clouds.
You will enter Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your professional guide will lead a comprehensive tour of approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, covering the most important sectors of the archaeological site, including:
You’ll learn about Inca engineering, astronomy, spirituality, and the theories surrounding the site’s purpose and construction.
After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore on your own, take photographs, or simply sit and absorb the atmosphere of this extraordinary place.
At the scheduled time, you’ll descend by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included).
In the afternoon, you will return to Hidroeléctrica by walking along the same scenic route. There, transportation will be waiting to drive you back to Cusco. Arrival in Cusco is expected late in the evening.
Yes. The route is widely used by travelers and operated by experienced drivers. Apple Travel Peru works only with licensed transport providers. As with any mountain road in Peru, weather conditions can vary, but safety is always prioritized.
The walk is mostly flat and follows the railway line. It takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours at a comfortable pace. No steep climbs are involved, and it is suitable for most travelers with moderate fitness levels.
The main advantage is the scenic overland experience and lower cost. You’ll see diverse landscapes that are not visible from the train and enjoy a more adventurous approach to Machu Picchu.
Yes, but permits are limited and must be booked in advance. Availability depends on official ticket quotas at the time of reservation.
Arrival in Cusco is typically between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
Machu Picchu by Car is not just transportation — it’s a full landscape journey. From the high Andes to the edge of the Amazon, every hour builds anticipation for that unforgettable moment when the Lost City of the Incas finally reveals itself.
