This 6 Day trek combines the two most popular routes to Machu Picchu, the Salkantay Trek and the Classic Inca Trail, into one unforgettable adventure. It is a challenging and rewarding journey for hikers who want to experience the remote wilderness of the high Andes and the rich history of the Inca Trail in a single trip.
Your adventure begins with the Salkantay Trek, circling the magnificent Mount Salkantay, which at 6,271m / 20,574 ft is the second highest peak in the Cusco region. This section offers incredible diversity, taking you from dramatic snow-capped mountains and turquoise glacial lakes down through changing ecosystems into lush cloud forest and subtropical jungle. Along the way you will see a wide variety of native plants, birds and wildlife.
You will then join the famous Classic Inca Trail, hiking the original stone path built by the Incas. This historic route takes you through beautiful cloud forest and past impressive mountaintop archaeological sites, before finishing with a sunrise arrival at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. The Salkantay Trek was named by National Geographic as one of the 25 best treks in the world. The Inca Trail is considered one of the most beautiful and popular walks in the world by leading travel guides such as Lonely Planet, Frommers and National Geographic.
Permits for the Inca Trail section are limited to 500 per day and sell out months in advance. This 6 Day combined trek is perfect for travelers who want to experience both the remote wilderness of Salkantay and the archaeological wonders of the Inca Trail, finishing with sunrise at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.

Morning Drive to the Trailhead
Your trek begins with a 5:30 AM pickup from your hotel in Cusco. After that, we travel by private transport to Mollepata (2,800m / 9,184 ft) for breakfast. Then, we continue one more hour to Cruzpata (3,100m / 10,168 ft). Therefore, here we meet our horsemen and horses who will carry all equipment for the next three days.
Hike to Salkantaypampa Camp
From Cruzpata we begin a gentle ascent to Soraypampa, with views of the snow-capped Salkantay Mountain (6,400m / 20,997 ft). Next, we continue through a valley filled with rivers, native birds and vegetation to our camp at Salkantaypampa (3,890m / 12,762 ft) at the foot of Salkantay. Finally, we spend the night under the stars.

Next, we descend along stone steps to our camp near Wiñay Wayna (2,680m / 8,792 ft), a spectacular Inca site built into the mountainside with views of the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba River. Yes, you need a permit for the Inca Trail section. Permits are limited to 500 people per day and sell out 6 months in advance. The Salkantay section does not require a permit. We will secure your permit when you book.
This trek is considered challenging due to altitude, reaching 4,855m / 15,928 ft at Inka Chiriasca Pass. We recommend 2 to 3 days acclimatization in Cusco before the trek.
Salkantay is a wilderness trek with glaciers and lakes. The Inca Trail is the original Inca stone path with archaeological sites entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. This 6 Day tour combines both.
Dry season from May to September offers the best weather, but the trek is available year-round except February when the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance.
Important. The list given here is a suggested packing list, based on the experience of our guides and staff, and passengers that enjoyed the Salkantay trail and Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Feel free to pack what you think you need to be comfortable along the hike.
