Best & Most Trusted Travel Agencies in Cusco for Machu Picchu, Salkantay Tours & More

28 October, 2026

Whether it’s the Inca Trail with Circuit 2, the perfect Salkantay Trek with private bathroom and hot shower domes, or Sacred Valley, here’s how to spot a real, trusted local operator with an office in central Cusco you can actually walk into.

Welcome to Cusco

Arriving in Cusco is a moment in itself. The altitude, the light, the history in the cobblestone streets, you feel immediately that you are somewhere special.

For most travelers at this point, one of two things is true.

1) You booked months ago, paid a deposit for the Inca Trail or Salkantay, and you are now hoping the operator you trusted is truly local, licensed, and available when you land.

Or

2) You’re still planning, comparing tours for Machu Picchu, the Salkantay Trek, Lares, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, the Sacred Valley or Choquequirao, and you find hundreds of agencies using the same photos, making the same promises, and all claiming to be number one. In either case, it is a lot to sort through, and choosing the right partner can feel overwhelming, especially with the language barrier.

Anyone can build a website in an afternoon. Not everyone has a licensed, physical office in the centre of Cusco you can walk into and talk to face to face with a team that has years of experience and who have actually hiked every route they sell, and has thousands of verified reviews on TripAdvisor you can read for yourself.

Below you will find everything you need to give you peace of mind when booking your special moments in Cusco, including recommended trusted operators you can rely on.

How to Know Your Operator is Truly Local Before You Pay a Deposit

Before you pay a deposit to anyone, run through this:

1. Do they have a real office in the centre of Cusco you can visit face to face?

A trusted local operator has a door you can knock on. Not just a website and a WhatsApp number. When you land in Cusco, you should be able to come visit us, sit down, look at maps, and talk face to face with the person who will handle your permits. That meeting is worth more than 100 emails. If they cannot give you a central address, be careful.

2. Do they have years of experience and verified reviews you can check on TripAdvisor?

Trust is built over time. Look for an operator with years of experience, not months, and a long trail of recent, verified reviews on TripAdvisor from real travelers. Read how they handle problems, not just the perfect days. A company with a lot to lose protects its reputation.

3. Do they use experienced, professional English-speaking guides?

You are not just paying for logistics. You are paying for someone to bring 500 years of Inca history to life, to keep you safe, and to make you laugh at 4,200 meters. The best operators in Cusco use only experienced, professional English-speaking guides who are Red Cross certified in first aid and CPR, and who are from here. Ask how many years your guide has been on the trail.

4. Can they explain the deposit and permits transparently?

A professional local operator will explain exactly what your deposit secures, give you a proper voucher, and answer questions clearly with zero hidden fees.

Circuit 2 Explained: Why Your Inca Trail Ticket Matters More Than Ever

This is the most important update for 2026 and it deserves its own section.

Machu Picchu now operates on circuits. Circuit 2 is the classic circuit. It is the one you have seen in every photo – the upper terraces, the classic postcard view over the citadel, and the full walk through the main ruins. For a first visit, this is the circuit you want.

If you are hiking the Inca Trail, your permit must now be linked to a Circuit 2 ticket to get that classic experience. This is why you must book months in advance.

Inca Trail permits are capped at 500 people per day including porters and guides. For high season from May to September, Circuit 2 permits sell out 6 to 8 months ahead. You cannot decide last minute. You must secure your space early and pay your deposit with a trusted local operator who holds a real Inca Trail Operator License. They are the only ones who can legally secure that Circuit 2 entry for you.

If an agency tells you they have Inca Trail Circuit 2 availability for next week, they are not being honest.

2. SAM Travel Peru – Built by a Guide, Run by Trekkers

Sam Travel Peru Logo

Website: samtravelperu.com | Specialty: Small-group Inca Trail, Machu Picchu and package treks

Why they are trusted: SAM Travel Peru is 100% Cusqueñian with zero outside shareholders, founded by Saul Alvarez Montalvo. Saul himself was once a guide on the Inca Trail. He started carrying gear, then became a guide, then built a company around how it should be done.

That culture is in the office. Everyone who works in the SAM Travel office has been on the tours they operate. They are not sales agents reading a script and are professional, friendly, and experienced. They have slept in the camps, hiked the passes, and eaten the food, so they can answer any question about gear, altitude, or difficulty and give you real, practical advice. Small groups of 4 to 8, their famous Orange Machine porter and gourmet chef team, and thousands of verified five-star reviews on TripAdvisor.

Website: skydomecamps.com | Specialty: Salkantay Trek luxury glamping

Why they are trusted: Skydome Camps is a trusted local operator who solved the hardest part of Salkantay – how to sleep well at high altitude.

They are a local team operating state-of-the-art geodesic domes on the Salkantay route. After a tough day hiking, you do not go to a cold tent. You go to your own dome with a comfortable bed, perfect for Andean nights, a private bathroom, a private hot shower, and a transparent dome for stargazing and stunning views over the snow-capped peaks. You still get the wild, raw Andes and an experienced English-speaking mountain guide, but you recover properly. For travelers who want adventure without sacrificing rest, this is the most intelligent way to do Salkantay.

Tips Before You Pay a Deposit

  1. Verify the license. Ask for their regional tourism license and Inca Trail Operator license number
  2. Visit the office. If you are in Cusco, walk in. A face-to-face conversation tells you more than any website
  3. Check recent TripAdvisor reviews. Look for recent, detailed reviews that mention guide names and how problems were handled
  4. Confirm Circuit 2 in writing. Your voucher should explicitly state Circuit 2 for Machu Picchu

Red Flags to Watch Out For

  • No street address listed (only a WhatsApp number or P.O. Box)
  • Demanding full payment via untraceable wire transfer without booking vouchers
  • Claiming they can get “last-minute Inca Trail permits” during peak season (May–August)
  • Unusually low prices that compromise porter pay and proper safety equipment

2 day trek to Machu Picchu was so amazing, I only wish I booked the 4 day trek

The 2 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was everything I expected and more. Gorgeous from beginning to end. The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable. And if the trek wasn't beautiful enough, Machu Picchu was breathtaking. Thank you to the guides and porters for being so attentive.
