Can You Use US Dollars in Cusco, Peru?

09 October, 2026

Yes, you can pay in US Dollars in Cusco for major expenses like trekking packages, train tickets, high-end hotels, and fine dining. However, Peruvian Soles (S/) are non-negotiable for daily expenses like taxis, market stalls, entry tickets, and local meals.
3 Crucial Rules Before You Arrive:

  1. Pristine Bills Only: Peru strictly rejects torn, marked, or wrinkled USD cash.
  2. ATM Withdrawal Limits: Local ATMs cap single transactions at S/ 400 to S/ 700 (~$110–$190 USD). If you must pay tour balances in cash, draw funds across 2–3 days to avoid daily limits.
  3. Exchange Location: Exchange cash at official Casas de Cambio on Avenida del Sol, 2 minutes from Plaza de Armas, for the best rates.

The “Crisp Bill” Warning – Why Merchants Reject Cash

Local Warning: In Peru, banks and merchants will refuse US dollar bills with the slightest tear, stamp, pinhole, heavy fold, or ink stain. A bill that easily passes in the US will be flatly rejected in Cusco.

Acceptance Checklist:

  • Bills must be series 2013 or newer (older series are heavily scrutinized).
  • Unblemished $20, $50, and $100 denominations (avoid $1, $5, and $10 bills, which get lower exchange rates).
  • Zero tears, even a 1mm edge tear will invalidate the note.
  • Flat, crisp paper with no written ink or cashier stamps.

Where to Exchange Money in Cusco (Avenida del Sol)

Avoid exchanging money at Lima Airport (LIM) or Cusco Airport (CUZ), where rates carry a 10%–15% markup.

Plaza de Armas (Cusco Center)
↓ 2-minute walk
Avenida del Sol (Best Exchange Hub) Best Rates
• Super Cambios
Av. El Sol 180
• Multi Dólar
Av. El Sol 320
• Major Banks (BCP / Interbank)
Secure ATMs
  1. Avenida del Sol (Casas de Cambio): Located just off the Plaza de Armas, this avenue hosts licensed exchange houses (e.g., Super Cambios Cusco at Av. El Sol 180, Multi Dólar at Av. El Sol 320) offering competitive exchange margins.
  2. Authorized Street Exchangers (Cambistas): Identified by light blue registered vests along Avenida del Sol. While convenient for small swaps, indoor exchange houses are recommended to verify notes and avoid counterfeit risk.
  3. Traditional Banks: BCP, BBVA, and Scotiabank on Ave del Sol will exchange currency safely, but usually charge higher spreads and involve longer waiting lines.

ATM Machines & Foreign Card Strategy

If you plan to pay a remaining tour balance or hotel bill with cash drawn from an ATM, start early. Local per-transaction limits can easily strand under-prepared travelers.

The Cusco ATM Cash Limit Trap
Plan Ahead
Typical Tour Cash Balance: $400 USD (~S/ 1,500 Soles)
Local ATM Limit (per transaction): S/ 400 Soles (~$115 USD)
Result: You must make up to 4 separate withdrawals over 2–3 days to pay your remaining balance!

Cusco ATM Comparison Guide

Bank Network Per-Transaction Limit Average Local Fee Insider Advice
Banco de la Nación
S/ 400 (~$115 USD) S/ 0 (Fee-Free) Best for fee-free small withdrawals.
BCP (Banco de Crédito)
S/ 700 (~$190 USD) S/ 20 – S/ 25 (~$6 USD) Highest limit; located at Plaza de Armas & Ave del Sol.
BanBif
S/ 700 (~$190 USD) S/ 18 – S/ 20 (~$5 USD) High limit, generally shorter lines.
Interbank / BBVA
S/ 400 (~$115 USD) S/ 20 – S/ 25 (~$6 USD) Modern machines, lower withdrawal limits.

Pro-Tip on Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): When withdrawing cash or paying by credit card, the machine screen will ask: “Charge in your home currency (USD/EUR) or local currency (PEN)?” Always select PEN (Soles). Choosing your home currency triggers a hidden 5%–8% conversion penalty from the terminal processor.

What to Do with Leftover Peruvian Soles

Leaving Peru with extra local cash? Avoid high conversion fees at the airport by using these smart insider tips before you depart Cusco:

  • Pay Part of Your Hotel Bill: At checkout, ask the front desk to apply your remaining Soles cash toward your final room balance, incidentals, or airport transfer, then pay the rest with your credit card.
  • Exchange Back on Avenida del Sol: If you have more than S/ 100 left, convert it back to USD cash at a licensed Casa de Cambio on Avenida del Sol before heading to Velasco Astete Airport, where currency exchange margins are significantly worse.

2 day trek to Machu Picchu was so amazing, I only wish I booked the 4 day trek

The 2 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was everything I expected and more. Gorgeous from beginning to end. The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable. And if the trek wasn't beautiful enough, Machu Picchu was breathtaking. Thank you to the guides and porters for being so attentive.
