Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Abra Málaga – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
Your journey begins early in the morning with hotel pickup in Cusco.
We leave the city behind and begin ascending through winding mountain roads toward Abra Málaga Pass, one of the highest drivable points on the route at approximately 4,300 meters (14,107 ft). From here, the landscape changes dramatically. The cold Andean air slowly gives way to a warmer, greener environment as we descend into the cloud forest.
The drive itself is part of the experience. Snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls, and tropical vegetation accompany us as we continue toward the Santa Teresa region.
By midday, we arrive at Hidroeléctrica, where you’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, the adventure continues on foot. You will walk approximately 2.5 to 3 hours along a flat and scenic path that follows the railway line toward Aguas Calientes. The route is surrounded by lush vegetation, mountains, and the rushing Urubamba River nearby. It is an easy walk, suitable for most fitness levels.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo), you will check into your hotel.
In the evening, you’ll meet your guide for a briefing about the next day’s visit to Machu Picchu. Afterward, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and rest early — tomorrow begins before sunrise.
- Overnight in Aguas Calientes
