Lares Trek Companies & Travel Agencies

02 January, 2026

The Lares Route is without a doubt one of the most scenic and cultural treks in Cusco. It is not as famous as Salkantay or the Inca Trail, but it is just as good, or even better, than the traditional routes.

You may wonder how you can see so many amazing landscapes and experience the local culture up close. Don’t worry. If your real interest is to enjoy the route and meet local people, here we explain who, or better said, which agency can help you experience the best of the Andes.

What is the Lares Trek?

The Lares Trek is one of the most cultural routes in Cusco. It is located in the province of Calca, in the Cusco region. To complete it, you need 3 or 4 days. During the trek, you visit waterfalls, share time with local people, and truly connect with nature.

How do you get to the starting point of the Lares Trek?

The starting point depends on the route you choose. The classic route begins with a drive to Calca, which takes about 1.5 hours. Then you continue for about 1 more hour to Huaran, which is where most Lares treks start.

This community usually welcomes visitors with great joy because these areas are less touristy.

What is the ideal Lares Trek route?

Day 1: Cusco – Pisac – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

Very early in the morning, we leave Cusco and head to the Sacred Valley. We visit the Pisac archaeological site and its local market. Then we continue to Huaran, where the hike begins. We hike for about 3 hours until we reach the community of Cancha Cancha. Lunch is on the way. In the afternoon, we meet a local family. We camp overnight, and at night the guide explains the Inca constellations.

Day 2: Cancha Cancha – Quiswarani

After breakfast, we start a long and challenging hike. We go up to the highest point of the trek and enjoy views of mountains, glaciers, lakes, and Andean animals. Then we go down to the campsite near the community of Quiswarani, passing waterfalls and traditional villages. Overnight camping.

Day 3: Quiswarani – Cuncani – Lares – Ollantaytambo

This is the most beautiful day of the trek. We hike up to a new mountain pass with spectacular views and then go down to the community of Cuncani. From there, we take private transport to the Lares hot springs to relax. After lunch, we continue to Ollantaytambo and take the train to Aguas Calientes, where we stay overnight.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Very early, we take the bus up to Machu Picchu to see the sunrise. You will have a guided tour of about 2 hours. After that, we return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and take the train back to Ollantaytambo. Finally, we take private transport back to Cusco, arriving in the afternoon.

What is the best time to do the Lares Trek?

In the mountains and the Peruvian highlands, the weather is hard to predict. However, there are two clear seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.

From April to September is the dry season. There is little rain, clear skies, and sunny days. The chances of having great views are very high.

From October to March, the rainy season begins. It is often cloudy, and hikes can be slower and more difficult due to rain. We recommend dressing in layers and wearing good outdoor clothing to have a better experience.

Now that you know everything, don’t hesitate to book this amazing route that promises culture, beautiful landscapes, and unforgettable views!

2 day trek to Machu Picchu was so amazing, I only wish I booked the 4 day trek

The 2 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was everything I expected and more. Gorgeous from beginning to end. The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable. And if the trek wasn't beautiful enough, Machu Picchu was breathtaking. Thank you to the guides and porters for being so attentive.
