San Pedro Market vs San Blas: Which One Should You Visit in Cusco?

31 December, 2025

Cusco is a city of layers. Just a short walk from the main square, two neighborhoods offer very different ways to experience local life: San Pedro Market and San Blas. Travelers often wonder which one to prioritize, but the truth is, they serve completely different purposes and shine at different moments of the day.

This guide compares San Pedro Market and San Blas across experience, things to do, and food, and explains why visiting both gives you a fuller understanding of Cusco.

Experience: Local Daily Life vs Creative Quarter

San Pedro Market: Everyday Cusco

San Pedro Market is where Cusco locals’ shop, eat, and go about their routines. It’s lively, practical, and unfiltered. The experience is sensory and direct: stalls packed with fruit, spices, grains, bread, and ready-made meals.

This is not curated for visitors. While travelers are welcome, the market exists first and mostly for locals.

Experience highlights:

  • Strong local presence
  • Fast-paced and functional
  • Excellent for observing daily life

San Blas: Artistic & Historic Cusco

San Blas feels calmer and more contemplative. Narrow streets, small plazas, artisan workshops, and viewpoints define this hillside neighborhood. While it attracts visitors, many artists and residents still live and work here. The market itself is smaller and offers a more quiet experience, mostly fort tourists. Here you can find the famous Machu Picchu Sandwich during breakfast time, and local flavors for lunch.

The experience is combined with the neighborhood, is about wandering, discovering small details, and enjoying the atmosphere rather than ticking off attractions.

Experience highlights:

  • Creative and historic environment
  • Slower pace
  • Ideal for walking and photography

2 day trek to Machu Picchu was so amazing, I only wish I booked the 4 day trek

The 2 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was everything I expected and more. Gorgeous from beginning to end. The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable. And if the trek wasn't beautiful enough, Machu Picchu was breathtaking. Thank you to the guides and porters for being so attentive.
