The Ultimate Postcard Picture Route: Exploring Machu Picchu’s Circuit 1

05 February, 2026

Machu Picchu is more than a destination, it’s an experience shaped by how you move through it. With multiple circuits designed to guide visitors, the route you choose can make all the difference: from capturing the iconic postcard photo to discovering hidden viewpoints that few travelers ever see.

For first-time visitors, Circuit 1 is the classic choice. But even within this circuit, there are variants that let you tailor the experience to your fitness, interests, and timing.

Circuit 1b: The Superior Terrace Route

Circuit 1b is the backbone of the classic Machu Picchu visit. It winds through the main terraces, the central plaza, and the iconic structures that appear in nearly every photo of the citadel.

This route is perfect for travelers who:

  • Want a comprehensive overview of Machu Picchu
  • Prefer moderate walking with plenty of opportunities for photos
  • Are visiting for the first time and want the classic postcard views

Tips for Circuit 1b:

  • Start early to capture the soft morning light on the terraces
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, there are uneven paths
  • Bring water, sun protection, and a camera for those iconic angles

Circuit 1b forms the foundation for the variants that enhance the experience with additional adventures.

Circuit 1 Variants

1b is the base, and each variant adds an extra dimension to your Machu Picchu visit.

Circuit 1a – Machu Picchu Mountain

This route shares the main circuit but climbs to Machu Picchu Mountain, offering sweeping panoramic views over the entire citadel and the surrounding Andean peaks.

  • Extra Duration: +2–3 hours
  • Effort Level: Moderate to challenging
  • Why It’s Special: The summit provides a perspective few get to see, ideal for dramatic photography and a sense of accomplishment.

Circuit 1c – Inti Punku (Sun Gate)

Following the base circuit, this variant leads to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. The original arrival point for Inca travelers completing the Inca Trail.

  • Extra Duration: +1–2 hours
  • Effort Level: Moderate
  • Why It’s Special: Standing at the Sun Gate, you can watch Machu Picchu appear from the trail as the Incas once did. Sunrise visits are particularly memorable.

Circuit 1d – Inca Bridge

Also branching from the main route, Circuit 1d takes you to the historic Inca Bridge, a narrow stone and wood pathway carved into the mountain.

  • Extra Duration: +1 hour
  • Effort Level: Easy
  • Why It’s Special: It’s a quiet, adventurous spot off the main path, offering insight into Inca engineering and a chance to explore a side of Machu Picchu that few visitors see.

Tips for Maximizing Your Circuit Experience

  • Timing Matters: Start early to avoid crowds, especially for the Machu Picchu Mountain or Inti Punku variants.
  • Dress and Gear: Layers, sturdy shoes, and sun protection are essential. Bring water and light snacks for the extra climbs.
  • Pace Yourself: Circuit 1 variants add extra time and elevation, listen to your body.
  • Guided Tours: A knowledgeable guide enhances your experience, sharing history, architecture insights, and photography tips along the way.

Why Guided Support Makes a Difference

Guides do more than narrate, they ensure your visit flows smoothly:

  • Advise on optimal times for photography
  • Navigate the circuit efficiently, including the variants
  • Provide context for terraces, temples, and stonework
  • Share stories that bring the citadel to life

Even experienced travelers benefit from a guide’s perspective, especially on longer or variant routes.

2 day trek to Machu Picchu was so amazing, I only wish I booked the 4 day trek

The 2 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was everything I expected and more. Gorgeous from beginning to end. The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable. And if the trek wasn't beautiful enough, Machu Picchu was breathtaking. Thank you to the guides and porters for being so attentive.
